According to the District of Columbia Police Department, a young girl of one year old was shot in the arm on Monday evening in the Washington Highlands neighborhood.
Around seven o’clock in the evening, a Jeep of a dark color drove onto the 800 block of Yuma Street SE. According to the police, a number of individuals exited the vehicle, and at least one of them fired a shot at a group of individuals outside before escaping.
According to the police, the girl was conscious and breathing when she was taken to the hospital, and it is anticipated that she will survive.
The authorities have stated that they have reason to believe that the toddler was not the intended target of the shooting.
Investigators have stated that they are reviewing surveillance footage from the area in an effort to identify those responsible for the incident. They are also requesting that anyone who has information regarding the Jeep contact them.
Trayon White, the incoming councilmember for Ward 8, stated that he was making efforts to get in touch with the girl’s family and assist them.
The mother is present, and White stated that “typically, we do a response team with violence interrupters in our organization to ensure that the family and those who are related get wrap-around services and follow-up.” As a result, “we will make contact with the family probably within the next fifteen to twenty minutes,” White said.
