Woman Reports Dead Dog in Tote — What Police Found Next Was Even More Disturbing

Beech Grove, IN – An Indiana woman, Kiley Dodd, is facing a misdemeanor animal cruelty charge after a disturbing discovery involving her dog. Police found the dog deceased inside a tote bag, covered in chemicals and maggots, sparking an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.

The arrest, made on September 29, 2025, brought to light troubling details about the care and custody of the dog, raising serious concerns about animal welfare and legal responsibility.

The Shocking Discovery That Prompted Police Action

Beech Grove police officers responded to a report in the 200 block of South 6th Avenue after someone alerted authorities that a dead dog had been placed in a tote bag with chemicals poured on it. The caller indicated the tote was left at her workplace, which led officers to the scene.

Upon arrival, officers found the dog inside the tote bag, severely neglected and in a state of decomposition, covered with an unidentified chemical substance and maggots, according to the probable cause affidavit obtained by PEOPLE.

Dodd’s Account and the Investigation Unfold

Kiley Dodd claimed she discovered the tote bag near her vehicle after finishing work at 7:30 p.m. She said she opened it to find the dog, later identified as Maze, inside. Dodd also mentioned finding a note on the bag reading, “For Kiley, here’s your dog,” although she later said she lost this note.

However, police found inconsistencies in Dodd’s story. When they contacted the individual she accused of placing the dog in the tote, that person stated they last saw Dodd and the dog six months earlier. Further questioning made it apparent to officers that Dodd was likely being untruthful about the dog’s care.

From the affidavit: “It was known that she was lying about the care and custody of the dog.”

Details Emerge About Maze’s Decline and Death

Dodd eventually admitted that the dog had died but claimed ignorance about the cause. She confessed she was not always at home and was only periodically checking on Maze.
