New York City – Two people tragically lost their lives after severe flooding inundated lower rooms in New York City on Thursday amid intense rainfall across the region. The heavy rain, caused by a strong frontal system, led to dangerous flash flooding conditions while prompting widespread closures and emergency responses.
Fatal Flooding Incidents Shake New York Neighborhoods
Authorities reported that the first fatality occurred around 4:25 p.m. in East Flatbush when firefighters responded to a call about a person trapped in a flooded basement. The cause of death remains undetermined. Shortly after, at approximately 4:44 p.m., a 43-year-old man was found unresponsive and later died in a flooded boiler room in Washington Heights. The identities of both victims have yet to be released.
“The impact of these sudden floods is a stark reminder of how quickly weather conditions can become life-threatening, especially in urban areas with vulnerable spaces like basements and boiler rooms,” said a spokesperson for the New York City Fire Department.
Intense Rainfall and Widespread Flooding Across the City
The National Weather Service detailed that a strong frontal system dropped 1 to 2 inches of rain by mid-afternoon, with an expected rainfall rate of 1 to 1¼ inches per hour. Some specific measurements included:
- 2.79 inches of rain in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn
- Over 2 inches in Midtown Manhattan
- 1.85 inches recorded in Central Park
- 2.09 inches at LaGuardia Airport in Queens
The flooding created hazardous conditions on roads. The Long Island Expressway in Queens was closed in both directions and the westbound lanes of the Belt Parkway in Brooklyn also shut down. Floodwaters reached above car tires in parts of Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, and in the Bronx’s Riverdale section, water reached the bottoms of car doors.
Ongoing Weather Warnings and Safety Concerns
Along with flood warnings, the National Weather Service issued a wind advisory through midnight Friday for New York City. Sustained winds of 20 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph, were expected to cause additional hazards, such as downed tree limbs and displaced objects like Halloween decorations.
