Texas Nurse Larissa Gonzalez Transforms Career After Son’s 31-Day NICU Journey

Corpus Christi, TX – A touching story of resilience and unexpected change unfolds as Larissa Gonzalez, a Texas ICU nurse, embarks on a new path after her premature son, Caleb, spent a grueling 31 days in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

What was once unimaginable for the nurse transformed into a heartfelt mission to support other families navigating similar challenges.

After delivering Caleb eight weeks early via an emergency cesarean section in April 2023, Gonzalez faced the harsh reality of seeing her son in an incubator rather than bonding with him immediately. This profound experience became the catalyst for her career change from adult ICU to neonatal care.

A Life-Changing NICU Experience

Working previously in the adult ICU at CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi – South, Larissa Gonzalez found herself in the unfamiliar and vulnerable position of being a patient and mother to a preemie. She recalls, ”

I am so used to being the opposite, on the other end of the stethoscope, doing that part, and I’m not used to being the patient.

“The early days were difficult, with Caleb connected to life-sustaining equipment and the anticipated mother-baby bonding delayed. Gonzalez recounts the emotional challenges: ”

Postpartum is always difficult enough with hormones and everything regulating, so I was really down, but I just kept thinking to myself: ‘All I have to do is just get through these next few hours and then he’s mine after that.’

Her hardest day came when she was discharged from the hospital, but Caleb remained in the NICU. Yet, the dedicated NICU staff supported Gonzalez, encouraging her involvement in Caleb’s care with skin-to-skin contact and diapering to foster connection.

Embracing a New Calling in Neonatal Nursing

Despite initial resistance, Gonzalez was inspired by the NICU nurses who saw the potential in her, planting the seeds for a career pivot. She shares, ”

I love what I do now. I would never work with adults again. The babies, they just cry, they don’t complain, they’re not mean to me. It’s a whole different world though of nursing.

Her experience gives her unique insight and empathy as she now helps families facing the uncertainty and stress of premature birth and NICU stays. She told, ”

I want to be the one helping these families and helping these babies get to their next step, just give them the start that they need.
