Mount Hood National Forest, OR – After an extensive and challenging weeklong search, authorities have suspended large-scale efforts to locate Devon Dobek, a 51-year-old experienced hunter who disappeared in Oregon’s Mount Hood National Forest on October 31. Despite deploying significant resources and personnel hours, no new evidence has been found.
The Search and Its Challenges
Dobek was reported missing after he failed to return from a hunting trip. He had messaged a friend that he would be returning early after successfully getting a deer, but never made it home. His truck was discovered near the Fish Creek Trailhead, close to SE Hwy 224 and 54 Rd, but there were no signs of a deer or Dobek himself.
The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office led a large operation over the course of a week that involved:
- Over 4,000 personnel hours contributed by volunteers and officials
- Ground search teams, helicopters, drones, airplanes
- K-9 units and ATVs navigating steep and wildfire-damaged terrain
- Areas with minimal to no cell service, complicating the search efforts
At one point, searchers heard gunshots believed to be from Dobek, but they could not locate their source. The rugged terrain, some affected by the 2020 wildfires, added to the complexity of the search mission.
Official Statements and Community Response
“The large-scale search efforts were active from Friday, October 31, through Friday, November 7,” said the sheriff’s office. “Additional searches may resume if new information or evidence is discovered.”
The office also expressed sympathies, stating, “Our thoughts remain with Devon’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
An online fundraiser supporting the search efforts has raised over $10,000 by November 11, indicating strong community involvement and hope.
