Woman Arrested in Hit-and-Run That Hospitalized 9-Year-Old Boy in Northeast DC

The news that the family has been waiting for since the horrific day that occurred on May 12 has finally arrived at the bedside of a nine-year-old boy who is still recovering from the injuries he sustained after being struck by a car on his way to school.

The individual who is suspected of running the child down in the parking lot of a retail mall located on Minnesota Avenue in Northeast District of Columbia and then driving away has been taken into custody by the police departments.

Following the completion of an investigation, the Metropolitan Police Department announced that it had taken Atoya Smith, who is 34 years old and hails from Hyattsville, Maryland, into custody on the charge of fleeing the scene of a collision.

The youngster was taken to the hospital after the collision, where he was treated for a broken pelvis, bruised lungs, a broken ankle, and other injuries.

His son, Zion, was being driven to school by his father, Davion Rawlings. There was a convenience store in the shopping mall, and they had just finished making a brief visit there.

According to Rawlings, “We just kept going, as if we were doing nothing.” Although I was aware that I should get out of the way of the car, when I turned around, I saw that my son was lying on the ground.

Rawlings, who instantly tried to chase the SUV on foot, can then be heard crying for aid with a degree of emotion and intensity that everyone hopes they will never have to use. The CCTV footage of the incident was captured by security cameras.

He recalled that there was one somebody, a woman, who came to assist.

The only person who took the initiative to pull out her phone and dial 911 was her, according to Rawlings, who added that she was the only one. During the time that everyone else is just looking and watching me cry, pray.
