As a result of a tow-behind car carrier turning onto its side on the overpass that crosses South Carolina State Route 170 on Tuesday afternoon, all eastbound lanes of United States Route 278 were closed.
However, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, the collision took place at approximately noon on Tuesday. Officials strongly recommended that motorists take Okatie Highway as an alternative route and warned them to anticipate delays in traffic in the area.
U.S. Route 278 was experiencing traffic bottlenecks that reached west into Hardeeville and east into the town limits of Bluffton as of 12:50 p.m. In addition, the on-ramp that leads from South Carolina State Route 170 onto Fording Island Road was closed, which resulted in additional delays on Okatie Highway to the north of the most heavily travelled intersection.
The British Columbia State Police, Lieutenant Danny Allen, stated that as of 12:40 p.m., they were not aware of any injuries.
