Des Moines Man Dies From Injuries After Devastating Apartment Fire in Merle Hay Neighborhood

In a press release issued on Wednesday, the Des Moines Police Department revealed that William Melroy, a citizen of Des Moines, had passed away as a result of injuries he incurred as a result of a domestic fire that occurred in the Merle Hay Neighborhood.

Firefighters and patrol officers from the Des Moines Police Department responded to an apartment building located in the 3700 block of 57th Street on Tuesday morning at approximately six o’clock in the morning. The structure was experiencing a fire. Melroy, 63 years old, was discovered by firefighters inside his flat.

According to the authorities, Melroy was rescued from the fire and sent to UnityPoint Methodist Medical Center, where he is currently in critical condition. After receiving extensive medical treatment, he was transported by helicopter to the Burn Unit at the University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center, where he passed on the next night.

As a result of an initial investigation, the authorities have come to the conclusion that they do not believe the fire was ignited to purposefully cause harm. The investigation currently being conducted by the Des Moines Fire Department and the Des Moines Police Department is still ongoing.
