At 10:32 a.m. on Thursday, Groton police were contacted about a robbery that occurred at the Chelsea Groton Bank, which is located at 1319 Gold Star Highway. This prompted the beginning of the investigation.
According to the information that they obtained, two men who were wearing medical masks insinuated that they were carrying a weapon and handed a note to a teller, demanding money. After receiving the money, they fled in a vehicle that they had brought with them.
According to the police, the suspects refused to leave their room when they discovered a vehicle that was parked behind the Super 8 Motel on Route 12 in Groton at approximately five o’clock in the afternoon. The vehicle is believed to be connected to the robbery.
In addition, law enforcement officers who were investigating a separate incident responded to the scene.
The suspects, who the police have identified as a father and son, reportedly told authorities that they were in possession of firearms and explosives and that they refused to surrender.
Additionally, the Emergency Services Unit of the Connecticut State Police was contacted at that time.
During the standoff, law enforcement officers and detectives assisted in the evacuation of customers and employees of nearby businesses, as well as guests staying at the motel. People were also moved to a secure location by means of transportation that was brought along.
Two bullets were fired from within the defendants’ motel room at approximately 11:05 p.m., according to the police.
Using a drone, state police were able to determine that both of the suspects were unable to function.
As a result of the potential for explosives, the State Police Tactical Unit and Bomb Technicians entered the room. They provided medical assistance to both suspects, and then they were transported to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital.
A suspect named Zachary Fallon, who is 27 years old and hails from Charlestown, Rhode Island, was identified by the police. At 3:59 a.m. on Friday, four days before he would have turned 28 years old, they reported that he passed away as a result of his injuries.
According to the police, the other suspect, Shaun Fallon, who was 56 years old and from Charlestown, Rhode Island, was taken to the hospital and later passed away as a result of his injuries at 8:47 p.m. Wednesday. As far as the police are concerned, Zachary Fallon was Shaun Fallon’s younger son.
The room at the motel was searched, but no explosive device was discovered during the search.
The investigation is still ongoing, and the police are requesting that anyone who may have information contact the Groton Police Department at the following number: 860-441-6712.
