Houston, MO: One Dead, Two Injured in Tragic Highway 17 Crash Involving Box Truck and SUV

A box truck and an SUV were in a fatal rear-end accident on Highway 17 late Monday morning, about five miles north of Houston. One person died and two others were hurt. In a work zone at about 10:20 a.m. on June 16, there was an accident. The Missouri State Highway Patrol Troopers are investigating, with help from the Texas County Sheriff’s Department and the Major Crash Team.

The official report says that the accident happened between a 2021 International box truck and a 2014 Dodge Journey that were both going south. The box truck driven by a 41-year-old man from St. Louis hit the Dodge Journey from behind while it was stopped in a work zone. The driver of the Dodge Journey was an 80-year-old man from Bucyrus, MO.

Both cars were badly damaged in the crash, and they had to be pulled away from the scene of the accident. At 10:25 a.m., Texas County Deputy Coroner Rowdy Douglas declared the 80-year-old male driver of the Dodge Journey dead at the scene. His female passenger, who was 79 years old, was seriously hurt and had to be flown to Cox South Hospital. The driver of the box truck was taken to Texas County Memorial Hospital by paramedics with minor injuries.

This is the 16th traffic death for Troop G of the Missouri State Highway Patrol in 2025. This is six more than at this time last year.
