California Residents to Receive $800 Relief Checks Starting This Week

California Residents to Receive $800 Relief Checks Starting This Week

You may have heard the talk lately—there are rumors that a $800 payment might be falling this June. Naturally, people are wondering, “Is this real?” Let’s break it all down so you can see what’s real and see if any of it applies to you.

There isn’t a new $800 stimulus plan.

First, let’s deal with the big one: no, the federal government is not sending out a new $800 stimulus check. Congress hasn’t passed any new aid packages like they did when the pandemic was at its worst. There is no such thing as a “$800 stimulus check from the IRS.” What you’re hearing is not true.

Still, some states are making their own rules, which is where the $800 talk comes from.

Some states are sending money this month.

There isn’t a nationwide check, but many states are helping out with their own relief programs. Some of them are around $800. Take a look at what’s going on in a few states:

Colorado: TABOR Pays Back

If you live in Colorado, you might soon get money through the TABOR refund system, which gives residents extra tax money.

  • People who file alone can get up to $800.
  • People who file jointly may get $1,600.
  • By April 15, 2025, you must have turned in your 2023 state tax return.
  • Payments should begin in late June or early July.

If you filed on time and lived in Colorado last year, keep an eye on your bank account or mailbox.

Property tax and rent rebates in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania has a Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program that can help seniors and people with disabilities get up to $800.

This could be you if you:

  • Over 65 years old
  • are a widow or widower over the age of 50
  • Are at least 18 years old and have a disability
  • Not more than $35,000 a year

You have until June 30, 2025, to apply, so if you think you’re qualified, do it now.

California: Tax Credits and Local Aid

There isn’t a big $800 check here, but California does have direct help:

  • A test program in Sacramento is giving some families $725 a month for a year.
  • Energy bill credits and some of the Golden State Stimulus funds that are still left over are also being given out.

You should check with your city or county because many of these programs are based on income and are only available in certain areas.

New York: Help with Inflation

This summer, New York will send payments—not quite $800, but still helpful:

  • Most residents who are eligible are getting $300 to $500.
  • You might be eligible if you made less than $75,000 by yourself or less than $150,000 with a spouse.
  • The money will be sent out in June.

These are meant to help people who are having a hard time with rising prices, especially those with low and middle incomes.

Still Waiting on Past Due Tax Payments from the IRS?

You may still be owed money through the Recovery Rebate Credit, even though there is no new federal check. This is especially true if you missed a stimulus payment from 2021.

You had until April 15, 2025, to file your 2021 tax return or make changes to it. You might still be getting your refund from the IRS if you did that. It’s not new money, but you may still be owed money that you forgot about.

Be careful of scams

Scammers are always close by when people hear the words “relief money.” Just a quick reminder:

  • The IRS will never call, email, or text you to ask for personal information.
  • Deals or rebates should never cost money to get.
  • People who offer “guaranteed money” for a fee are lying.

For correct information, only use state websites and the IRS.

In the end

For June, there won’t be a federal check for $800, but in Colorado and Pennsylvania, real checks in that amount are being sent out. It relies on where you live, how much money you make, and if you’ve filled out the correct forms.

Let me know if you’re not sure if your state has anything available or if you qualify. I can help you find it.
