Police Officer Shot in Santa Monica and Suspect Taken into Custody

A man who allegedly shot a police officer Wednesday afternoon in the Santa Monica Place retail area has been taken into custody by the authorities.

According to authorities, the killing happened after a Santa Monica police officer identified a man who was wanted in relation to the Sunday shooting deaths of two teens. One teenager was shot in the arm and another in the upper body when a guy opened fire on a Waymo taxi close to Broadway and 2nd Street. It is anticipated that both victims will recover.

According to Santa Monica Police Department Chief Ramon Batista, the police officer approached the individual and identified himself as a member of the police force. The officer then pursued the man on foot for a little while before being shot by the suspect. The cop, whose name has not been disclosed, was transported to a nearby hospital after suffering a non-life-threatening injury.

According to Batista, a resident’s tip resulted in the suspect’s arrest in Santa Monica after police posted a picture of a man wanted in connection with the incident on X. After a brief foot pursuit, officers found the suspect in a nearby park. The man reportedly leaped over a fence and onto the hillside that leads to the Pacific Coast Highway, according to witnesses. Finally, he was captured.

“One of our officers sustained injuries during the incident and was transported to a local hospital for medical care, where he remains in stable condition,” the police department stated in a statement.

The injured cop was one of the department’s newer officers, according to Batista.

“He’s got a great attitude … he is in good spirits and I feel hopeful he will recover,” added Batista.

The name of the man who was apprehended was not disclosed by authorities. What charges he might be facing are unknown.

Blocks from the beach and Santa Monica Pier, Santa Monica Place is situated at the southern end of the Third Street Promenade shopping district.
