17-Year-Old Taken Into Custody Following Deadly U Street Hit and Run

A juvenile who was armed during a deadly hit-and-run in Northwest Washington, D.C., has been taken into custody and charged as an adult with first-degree murder.

Kyree Young, 17, is accused by the prosecution of purposefully running down Donnel Phillips, 55, at 12th and U Streets in May in order to rob him.

They assert that the murder marked the conclusion of a brief, violent criminal spree that started roughly two hours prior.

In his 55 years, Phillips helped a lot of people, according to his family. The manner he was taken from them—run over and left for dead—still shocks them. They are also shocked to learn the age of the suspect.

Phillips’ daughter Tyshia Johnson stated, “The juvenile system is, just knowing it was a baby, it just crushes my heart.” “

The arrest order for Young included 90 security camera photographs as evidence, several of which showed a white 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV with Maryland license plates.

According to the police, it was taken on May 7, the morning Phillips was killed, at 1:28 AM from the 100 block of N Street NW.

At 17th and Irving NW at 3:40 a.m., a woman stated that individuals in a white SUV had almost run her over before robbing and assaulting her.

A few blocks away, at 14th and Newton, at 3:42 a.m., a guy stated that the people inside a white SUV had almost ran him over before beating and robbing him.

Phillips was robbed and killed by the occupants of a white SUV at 12th and U NW at 3:49.

Ninety pictures showing the stolen SUV at the crime scene locations are included in the arrest warrant. While Phillips was on his lunch break from his job as a nighttime concierge at a nearby apartment block, they depict it stopping on U Street across from where he was using an ATM.

Phillips was struck by the SUV as he crossed the street to return to work, according to heartbreaking security camera footage.

As he lay on the ground, the Hyundai’s occupants allegedly dug through his pockets, grabbed his cash, and attempted to use his ATM card, according to the prosecution.

According to court filings, Young was found through an anonymous tip and subsequently identified by pictures from the ATM camera, security cameras, and an old mugshot.

The young granddaughter of Phillips begged to be able to explain her affection for him to us.

She remarked, “He was a nice man.” “He would take the shirt off his back and give it to you if you asked for it, and he would give you anything else you wanted.”

According to a comprehensive 73-page arrest warrant, Phillips did something that would let his family witness the first steps toward justice while he lay on the ground dying.

“I got robbed,” he said to a food delivery man who had stopped to assist him. They robbed me and struck me with their vehicle.

Detectives were later informed of that information by the delivery driver.
