Mother Cooking Dinner When Toddler Drowned in Bath, Authorities Report

A mother from Wisconsin who is 28 years old has been arrested for the death of her 13-month-old son, who drowned when she reportedly left him alone in a deep bath. Court records show that Selena Doxzon was arrested last week and charged with one count of ignoring a child to the point of death.

A copy of the criminal charge says that on May 15, 2025, a woman told police that she heard her neighbor, who was later identified as Doxzon, “screaming from the lower unit of the duplex.” The caller said she saw Doxzon holding her son when she went downstairs. The caller said the boy’s “skin was blue” and his “body was lifeless.”

Police said Doxzon was “too upset to effectively communicate” while on the phone with 911. Soon after, paramedics came at the home in the 5000 block of 53rd Street in Milwaukee. They took over CPR from the mother and took the boy to Children’s Wisconsin for treatment by ambulance. Doctors tried methods that could have saved the person’s life but failed in the end. 911 called the cops and said the boy was dead at 9:45 a.m.

Doxzon told the police that she fed her 1- and 3-year-old boys when they woke up that morning between 5:30 and 6 a.m. and then gave them a bath. She said that while the victim was sitting down, she put her sons in the tub with the water “level just above the height of [his] belly.”

When Doxzon washed the kids, she “decided to let the boys play in the bathtub.” She left them in the bathroom while she made pancakes and sausage, which usually takes two to three minutes. When the food was done cooking, Doxzon said she started to clean up. Her 3-year-old son came into the kitchen drenched in water while she was “making pancakes and sausage.” This happened about four minutes ago.

This person went to the bathroom to get a towel. As the defendant went into the bathroom, he saw the victim’s body bobbing face up in the water. The victim wasn’t moving, and the water was close to their face. The defendant pulled the victim out of the water right away and began to scream for help. The defendant patted the victim on the back, but the victim didn’t move. The person who was harmed had blue lips. The defendant put the victim on the floor of the bathroom and tried to do CPR. As the defendant pressed down on the victim’s chest, water came out of his mouth.

The child died of “asphyxiation as a result of drowning,” according to an investigation.

Doxzon said she bathes her kids separately most of the time, but she just started bathing her younger child in the tub instead of the sink not long ago. Police said the child could stand up and “cruise” around the house while hanging on to things. He couldn’t walk on his own.

Doxzon is said to have said in an interview after Miranda that she “should have had far less water in the bathtub” for the safety of her child. She also stated that she couldn’t see the bathroom from the kitchen, where she was cooking.

Doxzon’s bond was set at $10,000 by a judge on Tuesday. For now, she is set to go back to court on May 30 for a preliminary hearing.
