Joshua Tree, CA: Local Couple Honors Teens Ruby, 17, and Hart, 14, with ‘Wind Phone’ After Tragic Drunk Driving Crash

MORENO VALLEY, CA —  During the month of June in the year 2019, Colin Campbell and Gail Lerner were traveling down Highway 62 in Morongo Valley with their two teenagers when they were involved in an accident with a drunk motorist.

Ruby, who was 17 years old, and Hart, who was 14 years old, two of their teenagers who were seated in the back of the vehicle, were both killed in the accident. The group of four were currently their route to their new residence in Joshua Tree.

A disconnected phone, sometimes known as a “wind phone,” was installed by the couple earlier this month, on the occasion of the six-year anniversary of their deaths. This feature allows individuals who have lost someone to make calls in just one direction.

It was in Joshua Tree, a spot that the family cherished very much, that the rotary phone booth was installed.

“The last thing we did as a family was pick that house,” Campbell said in an interview with the Post. “It became a grief sanctuary.”

According to what Campbell said on Instagram, anyone who may be in grief is welcome to take a seat in the “privacy of the vast desert” and call their loved one “via the cosmic connection.”
