New Florida Law: Drive Over 100 MPH, Face Jail and $500 Fine

New Florida Law Drive Over 100 MPH, Face Jail and $500 Fine

Starting July 1, drivers in Florida face harsh new penalties for extreme speeding as the state enforces tougher laws to combat reckless driving and high-speed crashes.

Under the new legislation, motorists caught either driving more than 50 miles per hour above the posted speed limit or exceeding 100 mph — regardless of the limit — may be charged criminally and fined up to $500.

This marks a shift from previous enforcement, which often treated excessive speeding as a civil infraction. Now, depending on the situation, violators may face misdemeanor charges, points on their license, and potential jail time.

Why the Change?

The move comes amid growing concerns over the number of fatalities linked to extreme speeding. According to Florida officials, drivers who travel at excessive speeds dramatically reduce their ability to react to sudden changes, endangering themselves and others on the road. High-speed crashes tend to be far more deadly, especially on highways and urban expressways.

Lawmakers backing the measure argue that previous fines and warnings failed to deter the most dangerous drivers. The new rule is designed to send a stronger message: reckless speeding won’t be tolerated.

Who Is Affected?

The law applies statewide and covers:

  • Drivers going 50 mph or more over the posted limit
  • Any vehicle caught traveling over 100 mph, regardless of limit
  • Repeat offenders may face escalating penalties, including license suspension

Police officers have been trained to enforce the rule immediately, and Florida Highway Patrol has stated that targeted enforcement zones will be expanded along known high-speed corridors.

Reactions from the public have been mixed. Many safety advocates applaud the move, citing the need for stronger consequences to reduce fatalities. Others believe the $500 fine is too steep or worry about uneven enforcement.

Nonetheless, Florida’s Department of Transportation stands firm: if you’re caught flying down the highway at dangerous speeds, expect serious consequences.
