aboard Tuesday, the Fire Department of New York City came to the help of three individuals who were aboard their yacht when it began to take on water close to the Whitestone Bridge in the East River.

The boat reportedly collided with something and started to sink, which prompted the people on board to make a “mayday” call over their marine radio, according to the New York Fire Department. During the time when a marine unit approached the yacht, the three individuals who were on board were clinging to the vessel as it was moving through the murky water.

According to the Fire Department of New York, the boaters were rescued one at a time and received medical attention for shock, hypothermia, and injuries.

“We participated in the summer boat program, which is a hand-on, intensive course that lasts for two weeks and prepares us for every possible scenario,” said Lieutenant David Torres of the Fire Department of New York. Together, we worked together, stayed in our lanes, and saved lives. This was made possible by our previous experience as firefighters in high-pressure circumstances where every second counts. The level of teamwork was outstanding. These individuals have earned my utmost admiration.
