Pennsylvania Driver Using Snapchat Killed Teen Boy in Hit-and-Run, Police Say

Police say a driver in central Pennsylvania was on Snapchat when she hit and killed a 16-year-old boy who was cutting weeds next to the road.

There are many charges against Mikayla Mustard for the hit-and-run accident that killed Curtis Groff on May 2, 2024, in Penn Township, Lancaster County. One of the charges is homicide by car. She was charged on Friday and is now free on $50,000 bail.

Last year, Mustard was named as the driver, but he was officially charged this week.

Police in Northern Regional County said they were called to Sun Hill Road around 9:30 p.m. on May 2, 2024, because someone said a teen was dead on the side of the road. Police said that his injuries made it look like he had been hit by a car, but the driver wasn’t there.

Mustard was driven to the scene of the accident by a family member while police were looking into it. She told police she was behind the wheel.

It was found that Mustard was on Snapchat when the crash happened. Police say she went off the road and hit the person while reading a Snapchat message.

It was said that Groff was killed while he was weeding a graveyard. Police said the 16-year-old boy used traffic cones to let people know what he was doing.

People who knew Groff told WHP that he was in charge of a youth group and played baseball for his church.

Should go back to court in June.
