Check your mail! Some people in Illinois will get money back from the state.
People in Illinois will get $45 million back from the Illinois State Treasurer’s Office.
Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs says that the state’s lost money program will give money to about 600,000 people who didn’t even know they had it.
“The first thing we tell people, is this – the money belongs to you, the check is real, and this is not a scam,” Frerichs said. “The second thing we tell them is to cash the check!” This summer, who wouldn’t want a little extra cash?”
There was a new round of the Enhanced Money Match program, which is part of the lost property program. The checks are part of that round.
A lot of the checks are for $50, and the government says all you have to do is cash them. Nothing needs to be done.
First, residents will get a letter telling them about it. Later in the summer, they will get a check in the mail.
Frerichs said that his office uses I-CASH, the state’s program for finding lost goods, to help people get their money back.
