Four people were killed and one state policeman was injured in a shooting that took place on Sunday morning at a Baptist church in Lexington, Kentucky. Two of the victims were women. The authorities have stated that the person who is suspected of being the gunman was shot and killed by police officers after a carjacking and multiple shootings occurred throughout the city.
What Happened?
Chief Lawrence Weathers of the Lexington Police Department stated that the gunman initially opened fire at the Richmond Road Baptist Church, resulting in the deaths of two ladies and the injuries of two men, one of whom is currently described as being in serious condition. Shockwaves circulated across the neighbourhood as a result of the shooting.
Just a few moments earlier, the same suspect had fired shots at a state trooper in Kentucky after being pulled over close to Blue Grass Airport at approximately 11:30 in the morning. The incident took place on a roadway that was located in the vicinity of the airport, and it did not interfere with flying operations. Currently, the trooper is being treated at the hospital and is in stable condition.
Vehicle was stolen by a suspect before to the attack on the church.
After the shooting at the airport, the suspect is said to have stolen a vehicle which was located approximately ten miles away from the airport. He then allegedly went to the church, where he started firing at those who were present on the grounds.
Police were able to locate the vehicle that had been stolen and bring it to the church, where they confronted the culprit. The shooter was ultimately apprehended and slain at the scene of the crime.
Statement of the Police
Within the context of a news briefing, Chief Weathers made the statement that “there are days like today that are extremely difficult.” It’s true that there are times when things occur, and you simply don’t know why they did.
In spite of the fact that the motive behind the attack is still unknown, the police suspect that the shooter may have known some of the people who were present at the church.
In accordance with the protocol established by the Lexington Police Department for officer-involved shootings, an internal inquiry has been initiated.
Airport Operations Unaffected
Blue Grass Airport continues to operate normally in spite of the gunshot that took place in the vicinity of the airport. The airport stated in a post on X (which was formerly known as Twitter) that a law enforcement probe had temporarily impacted a neighbouring road, but that it did not interfere with passenger flights.
