19-Year-Old Worker Tragically Dies After Being Pulled Into Meat Grinder at California Burrito Plant

A teen died on July 13 when he was sucked into a meat grinder at a business in California. This was confirmed by a statement from the City of Vernon.

On the after-hours cleanup shift at Tina’s Burritos’ food processing plant in Vernon, Calif., a 19-year-old worker was cleaning the meat grinder. The teenager, whose name has not been made public, was cleaning the machine when it started to work. Sgt. Daniel Onopa of the Vernon Police Department (VPD) says it sucked him inside around 9:30 p.m.

The teenager yelled for help as he was being sucked inside, and when other workers heard him, they tried to turn off the machine but failed. When the police arrived soon after, they found the 19-year-old dead inside.

The District Attorney’s Office and the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health are both looking into the terrible death. The VPD is still looking into what happened, but they don’t think there was any wrongdoing.

The person from the City of Vernon said, “Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and coworkers who have been affected by this tragedy.”

Monday, when someone from the Vernon Fire Department was asked for more information, they did not reply right away.
