Minneapolis, MN – A quiet Sunday morning turned into a nightmare for a Minneapolis couple when a 79-year-old woman was shot inside her home while preparing food at her dining table. Police believe the gunfire may have come from a passing vehicle, raising fresh concerns about public safety in the city.
Partner Describes the Shocking Moment
The victim’s longtime partner, Steven Osthus, said the incident unfolded in an instant.
“One minute she was cutting vegetables at the dining table, and the next she was shot in the abdomen,” Osthus recalled. “I can’t shake the picture of that bullet wound from my mind. Very difficult. If it had been a little higher, she might not have survived.”
Doctors at a local hospital removed the bullet along with part of her colon. While she is now in recovery, Osthus says the trauma has left deep emotional scars.
“Everything feels different in the house now. I keep asking myself, how can we ever feel safe here again?” he said, sitting in the same chair where the shooting happened just days earlier.
One of Four Shootings in Minneapolis
As CBS News Reported, The woman’s injury was part of a violent stretch in Minneapolis, where four separate shootings occurred between Saturday night and early Sunday morning.
Police said the shootings do not appear to be related. Still, the cluster of incidents has heightened concern among residents who are already worried about rising crime.
Police Respond to Community Concerns
In a written statement, Police Chief Brian O’Hara condemned the violence, calling it “especially troubling.”
“Any gun violence is unacceptable, and I’m grateful for our officers who respond with courage and professionalism,” O’Hara said. “Together with our federal, state, and local partners, we remain committed to driving gun violence down in Minneapolis.”
Despite the recent shootings, police emphasized that the city has actually seen a decline in overall gun-related incidents. According to official data:
- So far in 2025, 164 people have been shot in Minneapolis, compared to 235 at this time last year.
- Overall shooting levels remain below 2019 levels, a benchmark used by the department to measure progress.

Residents Call for New Solutions
For Osthus and his neighbors, however, statistics are cold comfort. He believes more needs to be done to address community safety.
“There needs to be some out-of-the-box solutions,” he said. “The crime is unacceptable, and a lot of neighbors feel the same way.”
Many residents in the area echoed similar concerns, saying that while the numbers may show improvement, the perception of safety is what truly matters for families living in the city.
Ongoing Investigation
The investigation into the shooting remains active. Police are working to determine whether the shot came from a passing vehicle or another source in the neighborhood. So far, no arrests have been made.

A Community on Edge
For the couple, recovery will be more than physical. The emotional impact of having their home — a place of comfort — violated by gunfire will take time to heal.
“We’re still weighing our options,” Osthus admitted, suggesting they may consider leaving the home if safety continues to feel out of reach.
As Minneapolis works to balance progress in reducing shootings with the lived reality of residents facing violence, stories like this highlight the ongoing challenge of restoring trust and safety in neighborhoods across the city.
