New Mexico Army Veteran Found Dismembered; Two Former Soldiers Arrested in Brutal Killing

TAOS COUNTY, N.M. — Two men have been arrested after allegedly killing and dismembering their Army veteran roommate, scattering his remains along a New Mexico highway in a crime authorities say was both brutal and premeditated.

The suspects — Rainor Joiner, 23, and David Degroat, 22, both originally from Georgia — have been charged with first-degree murder and multiple felonies in connection with the death of Matthew McLaughlin, 25, a West Virginia native.

Gruesome Confession

Joiner reportedly confessed in chilling detail, telling investigators, “I did it, I f* him, and I don’t f* regret it,” according to a report from KOB.

Authorities say the three men first met while serving at Fort Benning, Georgia, but Joiner and Degroat were already wanted for Army desertion at the time of the killing.

Discovery of Remains

McLaughlin was reported missing on July 31, prompting deputies to obtain a search warrant for his home. During questioning, Joiner admitted that he and Degroat ambushed McLaughlin on July 25, shooting him multiple times with both a rifle and a pistol.

He further claimed that, days later, they dismembered the body and disposed of the remains in bags along U.S. Highway 64 near Tres Piedras, roughly 80 miles north of Santa Fe. Forensic testing later confirmed the remains belonged to McLaughlin.

No Remorse

Officials described Joiner’s demeanor as “blank and emotionless.” Taos County Sheriff’s Office Undersheriff Gabriel Ortiz told reporters that the suspect laid out the details of the crime without hesitation or remorse.

Degroat told investigators that while Joiner carried out the shooting, he was forced to assist in the cleanup — holding open bags while the remains were placed inside, according to KOB4.

Motive and Premeditation

Court documents suggest Joiner’s motive stemmed from anger toward McLaughlin, accusing him of spreading rumors, using drugs, and bringing strangers into their home. Deputies believe the murder was planned weeks in advance.

Victim Remembered

Friends and loved ones described McLaughlin as a “sweet, kind person” who didn’t deserve such a horrific fate. Many have been left in shock, struggling to understand how the violent killing unfolded.
