Former Northern Colorado School Counselor Arrested for Alleged Sexual Assault of Student

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — A former school counselor in Northern Colorado has been arrested and faces multiple felony charges related to the alleged sexual assault of a student. Authorities say there could be additional witnesses or victims, highlighting the seriousness of the case.

Arrest and Charges

Cassadra Poncelow, 40, was arrested on Tuesday by Fort Collins Police, following a tip that she had an inappropriate relationship with a student while employed by the Poudre School District. Police allege the misconduct began when the victim was in high school and involved sexual contact at off-campus locations.

Poncelow is facing multiple charges, including:

  • Sexual Assault on a Child by One in a Position of Trust – pattern of abuse with an enhancer of Crime of Violence
  • Criminal Attempt to Commit Sexual Exploitation of Children
  • Aggravated Sexual Assault on a Client by a Psychotherapist
  • Sexual Assault

She was booked into Larimer County Jail on a $500,000 cash-only bond. Court records indicate Poncelow has not yet retained an attorney, and her initial court appearance has not been scheduled.

Alleged Victim’s Account

According to police reports obtained by CBS Colorado, Poncelow first met the alleged victim while navigating high school. The relationship allegedly started in the school counseling office and later continued off campus, where Poncelow is accused of kissing and touching the student in a sexual manner.

The victim told authorities that Poncelow encouraged secrecy by saying, “if you tell anyone, I’ll kill myself.” The alleged assault caused the student to fear for her life.

Poncelow reportedly admitted to the victim that her actions were inappropriate, citing the power imbalance and lack of boundaries, and expressed regret for her conduct following her recent sobriety.

Employment History

Poncelow worked for the Poudre School District from 2007 through 2024, including a role as a counselor at Poudre High School. She also held positions as a part-time behavioral health pathway lead and part-time engagement specialist.

Her LinkedIn profile highlighted her involvement in mentoring programs addressing suicide awareness, stress management, diversity, and sexual assault prevention.

After leaving the school district, Poncelow worked as a ninth-grade success coach at the Center for High School Success, a position that did not involve direct work with students. The organization has since placed her on leave following her arrest.
