Former Iowa Gymnastics Coach Accused of Exploiting Children Across Three States, FBI Seeks Victims

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — A former gymnastics coach with ties to some of the nation’s most recognized training facilities is under federal investigation for allegedly sexually exploiting young athletes across three states, according to the FBI and court filings.

Allegations Against Sean Michael Gardner

Sean Michael Gardner, who worked at Chow’s Gymnastics and Dance Institute in West Des Moines from 2018 to 2022, is facing federal child pornography charges linked to his time coaching in Mississippi. Investigators allege he installed hidden cameras at a gym in Purvis, Mississippi, capturing hundreds of illicit images and videos of underage gymnasts.

The accusations surfaced after a gymnast at Chow’s — a facility known for producing Olympic champions such as Shawn Johnson — reported suspicions that Gardner may have used his phone to record her inappropriately. Police later obtained a warrant and discovered disturbing evidence on his electronic devices.

Reports in Iowa, Wider Federal Probe

At least two gymnasts in Iowa have reported inappropriate behavior by Gardner, including allegations of touching disguised as stretching and spotting techniques. While no state-level charges have been filed in Iowa, the West Des Moines Police Department confirmed that it maintains an “open and active investigation.”

Federal prosecutors say Gardner’s misconduct is believed to stretch back nearly two decades. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa, Gardner may have victimized athletes in:

  • Prairieville, Louisiana (2004–2014)
  • Purvis, Mississippi (2014–2018)
  • West Des Moines, Iowa (2018–2022)

The FBI is now urging potential victims, their families, and community members to come forward with any information, photos, or videos relevant to the case.

Survivors Advocacy Groups Respond

The allegations against Gardner have drawn immediate response from survivors’ advocacy groups. The Army of Survivors, an organization founded after the 2017 USA Gymnastics sexual abuse scandal, emphasized that the case highlights systemic failures within youth sports.

“This case is not an outlier,” said Danielle Moore, the group’s vice president. “To the survivors: your courage is undeniable. We hear you, we believe you, and as a survivor-led organization, we are here to support and advocate alongside you.”

Ongoing Investigations and Community Concerns

The news has sent shockwaves through the gymnastics community, particularly in Iowa, where Chow’s has long been regarded as an elite training ground. Parents and athletes are now grappling with concerns over athlete safety, even in high-profile programs with established reputations.

Local officials have urged vigilance. The Polk County Attorney’s Office shared the FBI’s link on Facebook, asking anyone with information to come forward. Authorities stress that reporting, even if uncertain, could help protect current and future athletes.

Community leaders also point out the parallels to previous scandals, including the widespread failures uncovered in the case of former USA Gymnastics physician Larry Nassar, which ultimately reshaped how athlete safety is monitored nationwide.

How to Report Information

Detectives and federal agents are actively seeking assistance. Anyone who may have information or evidence regarding Gardner is encouraged to contact the FBI directly through its victim assistance webpage.

Reports can be submitted anonymously, and officials emphasize that families should not hesitate to share concerns, even if they seem minor.

Looking Ahead

As the investigation widens, many are calling for stronger safeguards in youth athletics, including better screening of coaches, mental health support, and more transparent reporting systems. For the young athletes and families affected, the road to healing may be long — but advocacy groups and authorities stress that their voices will not go unheard.
