Retired Mother Among 3 Victims in ‘Premeditated’ Waterfront Restaurant Shooting in Southport, NC

Southport, NC – A peaceful evening at a popular waterfront bar turned into tragedy on Saturday night when a gunman opened fire, killing three people in what authorities are calling a “highly premeditated attack.”

Victim Identified as Retired Mother of Three

One of the victims has been identified as Joy Rogers, a recently retired mother of three who had moved to Southport just a year ago after raising her family in California.

Her husband, Lennie Rogers, confirmed her death to local outlet WECT News. In a statement, he remembered Joy as a woman whose life embodied her name:

  • “Joy loved Jesus deeply, and because of that, she loved others deeply,” Lennie said.
  • “She radiated kindness and light everywhere she went and had a gift for making people feel seen and welcomed.”

The Living Word Bible Church in Winnabow also released a statement mourning her loss, describing Joy as “a beloved part of our church family—bold in her faith, compassionate toward others, and a constant encouragement.”

The Deadly Attack at American Fish Company

The shooting happened around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27 at American Fish Company, a well-known Southport waterfront restaurant and bar that also served as a filming location for the 2013 Nicholas Sparks movie Safe Haven.

Authorities said 40-year-old Nigel Max Edge, an Oak Island resident and military veteran, positioned himself in a white center-console boat just off the restaurant’s deck before opening fire with a .300 Blackout Sig Sauer rifle outfitted with a scope and suppressor.

At the time, live music was playing and patrons filled the deck area. Chaos erupted as bullets struck the crowd, forcing people to dive for cover.

Suspect Arrested, Charges Filed

After the shooting, Edge allegedly fled the scene in his boat. Deputies responding on a sheriff’s department vessel later spotted him as he attempted to retrieve his trailer. He was arrested without further incident.

During his first court appearance Monday, Edge was denied bond, with a judge ruling him both a flight risk and a danger to the community. He faces:

  • 3 counts of first-degree murder
  • 5 counts of attempted first-degree murder
  • 5 counts of assault with a deadly weapon

Prosecutors noted that some of the rifle ammunition was modified for maximum ballistic impact. Additional charges — including the death penalty — are being considered.

Edge is scheduled to return to court on Oct. 13 for a probable cause hearing and has requested a public defender.

Community in Mourning

Southport, a maritime town in southeastern North Carolina, is reeling from the attack. Residents gathered for vigils as news of Joy Rogers’ passing spread, with many describing her as someone who left a lasting impact despite living in the community for only a short time.

Her husband and church have asked the public to keep the Rogers family in their prayers as they grieve.
