Alabama Teacher Arrested After 4-Year-Old Found Severely Intoxicated; Parents Express Outrage

A girl from Alabama who was 4 years old was arrested after she was taken to the hospital with dangerously high amounts of alcohol in her blood.

Tracy Walker, 56, is a teacher at the school where the 4-year-old daughter of Mary and Albert Singleton was taken to the nurse’s office while she was stumbling and “slobbering at the mouth.” Records from the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office show that Walker was charged with serious child abuse after being arrested on Wednesday.

The girl, who had a blood alcohol level of 0.29, spent two days in the intensive care unit (ICU) while police looked into what might have happened to her.

The Singletons said that on April 28, just two minutes before classes ended, they got a call from the nurse’s office about their daughter’s health. Mary Singleton said that her child was “slobbering at the mouth and heavy,” and that the teacher gave her to her and told her that they should probably take her to the emergency room.

The girl’s blood alcohol level (BAC) was 0.29, which is more than three and a half times the legal limit for an adult. The couple took her to USA Children’s and Women’s Hospital. The girl spent two days in the special care unit before she was sent home from the hospital. The girl couldn’t go back to school for the rest of the year because she was still healing.

It was announced earlier this month that an investigation had begun, and on May 6, the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office took over the case. Walker was arrested on Tuesday. Detectives from the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office say the little girl told them that her teacher gave her a drink that made her sick.

On the webpage for Collins-Rhodes Elementary School, where the Singleton girl went to school, Walker is listed as a special education teacher. The school said in a statement that Walker was put on administrative leave after the first claims were made against her.

Walker was still in jail on Thursday without a bond. Reports say that the bond meeting is set for Friday.
