Animal Advocates Expose Widespread Neglect and Abuse of Pets on Los Angeles' Skid Row

On Skid Row in Los Angeles, the issue is not only affecting people, but it is also having a significant impact on the animals.

There are hundreds of dogs that are living in conditions that are tragic; they are disregarded, abused, and forgotten. Local rescuers are pleading with the city for assistance, but their requests have not been met with any response as of yet.

Starting With One Today is a charitable organization that operates out of Los Angeles and provides assistance to homeless dogs, cats, adults, and children that are residing in Skid Row.

As part of his work with Starts With One Today, Joey Tuccio was recently successful in persuading the owner of a pit bull to give him permission to take the dog to the veterinarian. At the age of five months, Rocky was found to have a positive test for the death-causing parvovirus. It is possible that he has only a few days left to live.

In a video that was uploaded by the Stand Up For Pits Foundation, pit bulls are seen being kept in wire crates that are covered with plastic tarps; the temperature is 90 degrees.

Abusive treatment of animals is taking place right in front of our eyes. According to Rebecca Corry, who is the spokesperson for the Stand Up For Pits Foundation, “And it continues to be ignored year after year after year, and it makes no sense because the laws apply to everybody.” If someone in Beverly Hills had pit bulls on a tarp, exposing them to the sun and allowing them to lay in their own pee and feces, the pit bulls would be taken, and the incident would most likely be featured on the front page of the newspaper. It seems that the laws are only applicable to a specific group of people.

This is not an unusual occurrence, according to advocates, who describe seeing it on a weekly basis and have been reporting abuse for years.

According to Victoriah Parker, who works at Starts With One Today, the dogs that she meets on Skid Row are typically restrained or confined in boxes whenever she visits. In addition, she mentioned that they have saved a couple dogs who had been struck by a car.

Additionally, they utilize their dogs to test their pills to ensure that they do not contain fentanyl and that they are not contaminated with any other substances. Therefore, we have had a number of pets in this area who have overdosed on fentanyl,” she explained.

Earlier this month, District Attorney Nathan Hochman made a commitment to take a more stringent approach to the cruelty of animals.

“If you commit crimes against animals, we will arrest you, prosecute you, and punish you,” Hochman stated to reporters.

However, advocates claim that those promises have not yet been implemented in the streets. According to Tuccio, there is no enforcement taken. According to him, there is complete stillness whenever the cops are summoned. “We are instructed by the police to contact animal control. “We are instructed to contact the authorities by animal control,” he stated.

Rocky is currently doing his best to save his life at an emergency room of a hospital. It is the opinion of rescuers that dogs will continue to perish in plain sight unless the city and county begin to enforce the regulations regarding Skid Row.
