Army Sergeant Opens Fire at Fort Stewart, 5 Soldiers Wounded in Workplace Shooting

Hinesville, GA – Five U.S. Army soldiers were injured in a shocking workplace shooting Wednesday morning at Fort Stewart, Georgia’s largest military installation, after an active-duty Army sergeant opened fire on his fellow servicemembers.

The suspect, 28-year-old Quornelius Radford, has been identified as an automated logistics sergeant assigned to the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team.

He was quickly subdued by nearby soldiers and taken into custody without further incident, according to Brig. Gen. John Lubas, Fort Stewart’s commanding general.

Shooting Sparks Panic on Base

The gunfire erupted just before 11 a.m. in the unit area of the 2nd Armored Brigade. According to officials interviewed by CBS News, Radford used a personal firearm, not a military-issued weapon, to carry out the attack.

The victims, all active-duty soldiers, were rushed to medical facilities on and off base. Three required surgery, and two were transferred to a hospital in Savannah for advanced care. Fortunately, all five are currently listed in stable condition and are expected to recover.

Quick Action Prevented More Bloodshed

Lubas praised the heroic actions of soldiers nearby who “immediately and without hesitation” tackled the gunman. “These soldiers, without a doubt, prevented further casualties,” he said.

The base went into lockdown at 11:04 a.m., and the suspect was in custody by 11:35 a.m. The all-clear was issued just before 2 p.m.

Suspect Had Prior Arrest, Unknown to Command

While the motive remains unclear, Lubas confirmed that Radford had a prior DUI arrest that was not known to his commanding officers. Investigators have ruled out any links to terrorism or extremist ideology, stating there is no ongoing threat to the local community.

Radford joined the Army in January 2018 and hails from Jacksonville, Florida. He had not previously been deployed to a combat zone, officials said.

The Army’s Criminal Investigative Division is handling the case, and Radford is currently held in pretrial confinement while charges are pending.

National Leaders Respond

News of the attack drew swift reactions from top officials. President Trump, speaking from the Oval Office, called the incident an “atrocity” and assured the public that “the perpetrator… will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.” He added, “The entire nation is praying for the victims and their families.”

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth echoed the sentiment, calling the incident a “cowardly shooting” and praising first responders who “charged into danger.” He added, “Swift justice will be brought to the perpetrator and anyone else found to be involved.”

Fort Stewart’s Legacy

Covering nearly 280,000 acres, Fort Stewart is the largest Army base east of the Mississippi River and home to the 3rd Infantry Division. In the 2020 census, the installation had a population of over 8,800 people.

The base is situated just outside Hinesville, Georgia, roughly 40 miles southwest of Savannah and close to the state’s Atlantic coastline.

Community Rallies in Support

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp shared that he is in contact with military and law enforcement officials.

“We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers,” he said. “We ask that Georgians everywhere do the same.”
