The California Highway Patrol says the driver of an Aston Martin was killed when it crashed into a pole early Friday morning during a high-speed chase in Boyle Heights.
When deputies caught up to the driver of the silver sports car around 3 a.m., they had to stop after about two minutes because the car was going too fast. A report of a car going too fast led to the chase.
A few minutes later, at the corner of Soto Street and Washington Boulevard, the car hit a pole. At the time of the crash, a CHP chopper was following the car.
He tried to get away, but police caught him after about a block. The CHP says that he lost consciousness while he was being arrested.
At the scene, CHP Sgt. Dan Keene told reporters that the man had a “medical emergency” because he seemed to have passed out. Keene said the driver was “uncooperative” when police tried to arrest him.
“There was a small amount of force that was used in the form of a tackle to take the driver into custody,” said Keene. “The driver started to show signs of distress and throw up when the fire department arrived on the scene.” No one knows what he ate or if his handicap played a role.
People tried to bring him back to life, but he died at the scene.
It wasn’t clear if the driver died from an illness or the crash itself. The reason of death will be decided by someone from the coroner’s office.
Keene said that the police were waiting for a search warrant before they could look inside the car. He said the car’s title was in Orange County.
He said it’s likely that the area will stay closed until the afternoon.
