According to the police, a guy from Torrington was taken into custody after a collision that occurred on Tuesday evening left his vehicle hanging halfway off a bridge that was located above the Naugatuck River.
According to an email sent by Torrington police Captain Brett Johnson, David Lucian, 48, was taken into custody and charged with committing many offenses, including making an incorrect turn, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, possessing a controlled substance, and possessing substance paraphernalia.
According to Johnson, around 6:41 p.m. on Tuesday, police were called to the intersection of Wall Street and East Pearl Street for a complaint that a vehicle had crashed and was partially hanging off of a bridge. The vehicle was partially suspended from the bridge.
“The vehicle was found to be hanging halfway off of the bridge,” Johnson stated in his statement.
According to Johnson, Lucian, the driver of the vehicle, was unresponsive but did not appear to have any visible injuries. When he was trapped inside the vehicle, the Torrington Fire Department was able to rescue him.
“Lucian came to and narcotics and paraphernalia were located inside his vehicle,” Johnson explained to reporters. “Lucian declined any medical attention.”
According to Johnson, Lucian appeared to be “heavily” under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and he did not perform satisfactory results on standardized field sobriety tests at the scene of the incident.
“It was determined that Lucian’s vehicle had traveled eastbound on Donahue Place and traveled across Wall Street, knocking down the metal bridge gate and getting stuck on the edge of the road on the bridge over the Naugatuck River,” Johnson said. “This was determined after the investigation was completed.”
The vehicle has already been removed from the bridge, according to Johnson, and there were no injuries reported as a result of the collision.
According to Johnson, Lucian was taken into custody and was held in lieu of a $55,000 bond. This was due to the fact that he had two outstanding arrest warrants. The Superior Court in Torrington is scheduled to hear him on Wednesday.
