On Wednesday morning, there was a shootout outside of a hotel in Chesterton, Indiana. One man was killed and one police officer was hurt.
Just after 8 a.m., Indiana State Police said they were called to Gateway Boulevard and Maison Drive, which is across from the Hilton Garden Inn, for a suspicious man. The Chesterton Police Department was also called.
Chesterton Police Chief Tim Richardson said that when two officers arrived at the scene, they talked to the man and then the man and officers fired their guns at each other.
Police said that man was killed when they shot at each other. His name has not been made public.
He also said that a 33-year-old police officer had been shot and was being treated at a hospital in Illinois. When asked where he was shot, police did not say, but Richardson said his outlook is good.
“Our thoughts are with the police officer and his family.” “Right now they are the most important thing to us,” he said.
When the police arrived at the Hilton Garden Inn, people were in the middle of breakfast.
“It seemed like it was a normal morning, and things got crazy quick,” said Seth. “Two police officers came in. The man was across the room.
Rich was in the lobby with his family when police arrived at the hotel in response to a 911 call about a suspicious man. The man was questioned by police, and he was later shot outside.
“They just talked to him, you know, about going outside; and, thankfully, he went out with them,” he said.
Rich saw two cops follow the man to the parking lot.
“The officers and the gentleman had gone down where we couldn’t see, and that’s when we heard the first shots,” he added. “I and another guy kind of looked out. We saw that person lying down, and then we saw the police officer lying down in the road.
Rich said that his family ran to their hotel room while he went outside to check on the hurt police officer.
“Tried to help get traffic away from the area,” he stated. “My wife and I are going to pray for both officers. They had a rough day, you know.”
The Indiana State Police are still looking into what happened with the shooting. They said that a gun was found at the scene.
Police said that the two officers who were involved in the incident are being put on administrative leave as planned by the department.
People are being asked to stay away from the scene of the crime for the next few hours while the police continue their investigation.
