Four people were hurt when a truck hit them near Felix G. Botello Elementary School in Oak Cliff on Thursday afternoon. Police in Dallas say one child was killed and two children and an adult were hurt.

A truck hits people walking near a school.

Around 3:30 p.m., the accident happened in the 200 block of South Marsalis Avenue, not far from I-35E.

Responders from Dallas Fire-Rescue took the hurt people to the hospital. The boys (12 years old) and girls (8 years old) were all proven to be students at the school by the Dallas Independent School District. One of the kids died from their wounds. The other two are still in Pediatrics in serious but stable condition. The adult’s health is good.

Crash happened after firing

Officials say the crash happened not long after school let out.

Police said the driver, who was older, stayed at the scene and is helping with the probe. The police don’t think speed played a part.

Neighbors talk about the sad scene

Andrea Williams, who lives in the neighborhood, talked about what happened with obvious feeling.

“When I got out of the car I saw all the blood and the babies’ clothes, and I put two and two together,” he said. “Summer hasn’t even started and things like this happen, and as a parent it just worries you.”

People in the area say it’s dangerous.

Bryan Evans, another neighbor, said he was sad but not surprised.

“I’m very saddened by it, but I’m not surprised,” he said. “There’s children always crossing the street going to the apartment complex.”

Evans remembered a close call that happened not long ago in the same spot.

“It was a young gentleman walking across the street with two little girls – and literally two children almost got hit,” he shared. “The car had to stop immediately.”

The community wants safety measures

As people in the community mourn, they are asking for more safety measures and telling both drivers and pedestrians to be very careful, especially near schools.
