Clarksdale and Eastern Arkansas Swelter as Heat Index Hits 114° – Warning in Place Until 9 p.m.

This Thursday, life-threatening heat is hitting the Delta. In some parts of Mississippi and eastern Arkansas, the heat index reached 114 degrees, which led to an Extreme Heat Warning that lasts until 9 p.m.

As of this evening, the National Weather Service in Memphis says it will remain dangerously hot and muggy, mainly in Coahoma, Tunica, Quitman, Tallahatchie, and Panola counties in Mississippi and Cross, Lee, Phillips, and St. Francis counties in Arkansas. People in Clarksdale, Batesville, Helena-West Helena, Wynne, and Forrest City should stay inside because more people are going to get sick from the heat.

Officials in the area are telling everyone to stay inside where it’s cool, drink a lot of water, and check on family and friends who might be vulnerable. The hours of city cooling centers in Clarksdale and Helena-West Helena have been extended. In Panola County, some schools have pushed back outdoor sports. Power lines may be under a lot of stress in the afternoon, so charge your phones and use less energy when you can.

This is one of the hottest July days in the area since 2021, and the worst weather is predicted from late morning until sunset. Calls for heat stroke and thirst are still coming in at a high rate.

The Extreme Heat Warning will stay in place until 9 p.m. If the temperatures stay high, more warnings or service interruptions may be issued.
