Critical Condition for Two Swimmers Rescued from Plum Island Point Waters with Help from Fishermen

After being rescued from the sea off of Plum Island Point in Massachusetts on Sunday night, two swimmers are receiving life-threatening treatment for their injuries.

The Newburyport Police and Fire Department reported that they arrived at Plum Island Point just after 7 o’clock in the evening and discovered two swimmers who were in a precarious situation. One of the swimmers, who was unresponsive, was taken to shore by a fisherman from one of the two fishing boats that were in the vicinity. The Coast Guard assisted in bringing the second swimmer to shore once they were able to get them into the other boat. It was also the case that the second swimmer was unresponsive.

Both swimmers were sent to the hospital, where they were both in severe condition. At this moment, we do not have any information regarding their present condition.

“I’m kind of shocked but not really because it is the Merrimack and stuff happens here every year,” said Jacob Kirk, a resident of Newburyport. “I do not really feel shocked.”

There is no apparent explanation as to why the two swimmers were in the water. An investigation into the incident is still ongoing, according to the police.

About 45 miles to the north of Boston is where you’ll find Plum Island Point.
