A vigil was held for the 9-year-old boy who was killed while crossing the street after school.
Botello Elementary’s last day of school was Friday. The next day, 9-year-old Jose Garcia Ledesma was killed, and the community came together to mourn instead of enjoy summer.
Yuri Ellet, a kindergarten teacher, said, “Even though the sun was out, it felt cloudy and rainy.”
Along with the staff, classmates, neighbours, and friends put candles, flowers, and toys near the scene of the crash on Thursday.
Police in Dallas say the family was hit by a pickup truck around 3:30 p.m. as they crossed Marsalis Avenue.
She spoke Spanish and said, “A pain in my life that I never would have wanted to feel.”
She said it was a pain she never wanted to feel.
The school and society have helped the family financially and emotionally.
Ellett said, “We all grieve the loss of a child, an innocent child, in such a foolish way.”
Ellett said that there is a general feeling of loss on campus and in the neighbourhood, even though Garcia Ledesma was never in his class.
“I’m sure he was glad.” “He was glad to be at school with his friends,” he said.
The two other kids who were hurt are also getting help from their neighbours.
Their mother said that Garcia Ledesma’s twin sister Keyla Ledesma broke her leg and hip. She said a neighbour had an 11-year-old girl who was also taken to the hospital by Dallas-Fire Rescue.
Dallas police say they are still looking into the crash, but it doesn’t look like speed played a role.
The driver who stayed at the scene of the accident is not being charged.
