Deadly Accident on 301 South and Oakwood Drive: Two Killed

Police in Bulloch County say two men were killed in a crash on U.S. 301 South on Saturday night. Two other people were hurt and were flown to a hospital in Savannah.

The Georgia State Patrol sent Trooper First-Class Carl Hutchinson and a few other troopers to the scene just after 7:10 p.m. He told the Statesboro Herald that an 18-wheeler tanker rig hit an Oldsmobile minivan from the side as it turned left onto U.S. 301 South from Oakwood Drive.

The accident happened close to Newell Recycling, not far from where two people were killed on foot a few weeks ago.

He said that the minivan driver and a young passenger in the back of the van were both alive and were taken to East Georgia Regional Medical Center by EMS.

Futch said that the male passenger in the front seat and the male passenger in the back of the van were both killed and declared dead at the scene.

Both of the survivors were taken to the hospital and then flown to a hospital in Savannah. He said the survivor’s injuries were very bad.

Scott Bryant, a photographer for the Statesboro Herald, was at the scene soon after it happened. He was on his way to cover a basketball game in Metter for work. He told Bryant that the people in the car were from Camden County and were on their way home from visiting family in the area.

At the time of press, neither the police nor Futch could say who the victims were. Also, no one knew how the tanker’s driver was doing.

The Statesboro Herald on Tuesday and this website, statesboroherald.com, will both have more information as it comes in.
