Florida Mom Livestreams Attempted Drowning of Herself and Three Kids in Community Pool, Prosecutors Say

Valrico, FL – In a chilling incident early Wednesday morning, a 24-year-old Florida woman allegedly tried to drown herself along with her three young children by tying them together and pushing them into the deep end of a community pool. Prosecutors say Shaniece Willingham’s horrifying act was an attempt “to end her life and kill her children at the same time.”

The children, aged 3 years, 2 years, and 8 months, survived thanks to the quick response of family members and law enforcement.

Willingham reportedly livestreamed the entire ordeal on Instagram, leaving friends and family a disturbing “last goodbye” before heading to the pool. Officials described the situation as a heartbreaking tragedy narrowly averted.

The Livestreamed Farewell and Journey to the Pool

Court documents reveal that Shaniece Willingham posted a live video on Instagram as she loaded her children into a wagon and headed toward the community pool located on Sacramento Street in Valrico, Florida. During the livestream, she expressed her emotional distress, stating it was her “last goodbye” and confided she “could not take it anymore.” She reportedly told viewers, “she loved her kids so much, but she could not leave them behind because no one can take care of them, and they would be safe with God.”

This social media broadcast alarmed relatives who rushed to the scene, prompting a call to Hillsborough County sheriff’s deputies who arrived around 1:30 a.m. and found the family alive after being pulled from the pool.

Background Tensions Leading to the Attempted Filicide

According to prosecutors, the incident followed an earlier altercation between Willingham and her mother. Willingham was reportedly upset that the children’s father refused to pick up her and the kids after being asked to leave her mother’s home. The court motion quotes the father as saying he “doesn’t give a f— and he ‘ain’t doing anything.'”

Before arriving at the pool, Willingham allegedly made a FaceTime call to her mother, expressing love, and showed her location at the pool before carrying out the act.

The Attempted Drowning and Rescue

Prosecutors detailed how Willingham sat at the poolside and tied herself to her three children using a rope taken from a lifesaving flotation device known as a Life ring. None of them knew how to swim. She then pushed all four into the pool’s deep end, where the water measures approximately six feet deep.

Immediately after, family members pulled the children and Willingham out of the pool, saving their lives. Sheriff Chad Chronister condemned the act as a deliberate cruelty rather than a cry for help.

“The fear and betrayal these innocent children must have felt, at the hands of the one person meant to love, care for, and protect them, is unimaginable,” Sheriff Chronister said. “There is no excuse, no justification. These children were failed by their own mother, and it is only by the quick actions of their family that they are alive today.”

Legal Action and Charges

Following the incident, Willingham admitted to authorities that she intended to end both her life and that of her children. She now faces multiple charges, including attempted murder and has been ordered held without bond. Her pretrial detention hearing is set for September 29.
