Palm City, Florida — Eleven men are facing charges after deputies seized 6,000 pounds of stolen saw palmetto berries in what investigators describe as an organized theft operation targeting Florida’s agricultural lands.
Deputies Say Operation Was Organized Crime
Authorities allege the suspects were part of a multi-county crime ring targeting farmland across the state. Detectives believe the crew scouted rural areas and private properties for valuable saw palmetto berry crops, a plant prized for its medicinal uses and sold in supplement markets.
Their most recent target was a property near SW Citrus Boulevard in Martin County. Agriculture Unit detectives, already conducting counter-surveillance, tracked the group’s movements and waited for the right moment to intervene.
Arrest and Resistance
When deputies moved in, all 11 suspects allegedly attempted to flee and resist arrest. Multiple taser deployments were necessary to bring them into custody.
Of the 11 men arrested, nine are reportedly undocumented immigrants and are now being held under ICE detainers. The group’s charges range from felony theft to resisting arrest.
According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, the group had been under surveillance before deputies intercepted them during a planned heist.
Evidence Points to Wider Theft Network
In addition to the massive berry haul, investigators recovered detailed journals listing other potential victims. The notes appeared to outline properties and farms across multiple Florida counties, suggesting the thefts were part of a broader and ongoing criminal operation.
Detectives say the seizure prevented a significant financial loss for local farmers. With saw palmetto berries selling for lucrative prices during harvest season, a loss of this magnitude could have had a major impact on agricultural operations.
Sheriff’s Office Sends Strong Warning
The Martin County Sheriff’s Office took to social media to issue a pointed message to potential thieves.
“Let this be a warning: if you come into Martin County to steal, especially from our farmers and landowners, you’re risking your freedom. And if you are undocumented and commit these crimes, know that we will cooperate fully with federal authorities, including ICE, for your detainment,” the post read.
Why Saw Palmetto Berries Are Targeted
Saw palmetto berries, harvested from the Serenoa repens plant native to the southeastern United States, are commonly used in herbal supplements, particularly for prostate health. The berries are in high demand, and Florida is a leading supplier.
Harvesting the berries without permission from landowners is a crime in the state, and the Florida Department of Agriculture requires permits for legal collection.
Impact on Local Farmers
For farmers, the theft of thousands of pounds of berries represents more than just a financial setback. The harvesting process is labor-intensive, and illegal picking can damage plants, impacting future yields. Local growers say these thefts not only reduce income but also threaten the sustainability of their crops.

Legal Consequences
The suspects now face felony theft and misdemeanor charges related to the incident. Those without legal residency status will also face federal immigration proceedings.
Officials say additional arrests are possible if the investigation links other individuals to the operation.
This bust highlights the intersection of agricultural theft and organized crime in Florida, particularly involving high-value crops like saw palmetto berries. Authorities are urging landowners to remain vigilant during harvest season and report suspicious activity.
