Heartbreak as 16-Month-Old Girl Doesn’t Wake from Nap at Daycare, Authorities Report

One of the little girls in North Carolina was put down for a nap on her first day of day care on Monday. During her nap, her mother got the call that no parent ever wants to get.

A family friend started a GoFundMe page to help the girl, whose name is only “Maddy.” She was dropped off at day care by her mother on Monday, which was said to be a “heartbreaking, nerve-wracking” day. Reports say that while Maddy and another child were at the Creative Beginnings day care center in Lenoir, North Carolina, the mother, whose name was not made public, got updates about them. Then she got a call saying Maddy had not woken up from her nap.

As Maddy was being rushed to the hospital, emergency medical services appeared at Creative Beginnings and continued to try to save her life. When they got there, she was already dead.

Sources say that the Lenoir Police Department started their investigation into Maddy’s death right away. The county medical examiner did an autopsy, which is what made the cops think Maddy’s death was a crime.

On Wednesday, cops charged Alexandra Coffey, 29, a worker at Creative Beginnings, with manslaughter without consent. Without any problems, she was arrested and put in the Caldwell County Detention Center on a $500,000 bond. It was said on a local news radio station that Coffey was due in court on Thursday.

Some people say that the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services also took away Creative Beginnings’ license. The agency said in the order that the center had to close by Wednesday at the end of the business day that it had to be closed “because the agency has found that the public’s health, safety, or welfare requires emergency action.”

The report said that Creative Beginnings had been fined three times for safety violations connected to CPR and first aid during unannounced inspections. The problems were fixed in September 2024, though. There were five stars on Creative Beginnings’ license at the time of Maddy’s death. The day care center was helping the police with their investigation, the police said.
