Illegal Fireworks Spark Boat Blaze in East Hampton, Officials Say

A boat fire that occurred over the holiday weekend in East Hampton and resulted in the injuries of two persons is being thought to have been started by illegal pyrotechnics.

The Emergency Response Unit of the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection was initially called to Lake Pocotopaug to assist with a gasoline release following a boat fire. On Saturday evening, the unit was directed to Lake Pocotopaug to assist with the release of fuel.

incident officials stated that fireworks that were not authorized were the cause of the incident.

According to the officials from the fire department, two individuals leaped into the water and were rescued by a boat that was in the vicinity. Both of the individuals had minor injuries.

Additional assistance was provided by the Hartford Bomb Squad in the seizure of the remaining illegal fireworks.
