by Chicago, IL – In a groundbreaking move, Illinois residents can now add their driver’s licenses and state IDs to their iPhones, bringing a new era of convenience and digital innovation to the state’s identification system. The rollout started Wednesday at 7 a.m., marking the first phase of a program that will later extend to Samsung and Google phone users.
This initiative, confirmed by Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias, aligns with recent technological advancements including Apple’s new Digital ID system. It aims to make everyday transactions like airport security, bar checks, and age verification smoother—while still protecting privacy and security.
The Digital ID Rollout: What to Expect
Residents with iPhones can add their driver’s licenses or state IDs to their Apple Wallets immediately. These digital IDs will be valid at TSA checkpoints at major airports like O’Hare and Midway, as well as in restaurants and bars across Illinois.

The 2019 law enabling digital IDs introduced strict privacy controls, including encrypted data exchanges and selective information sharing. Users can choose which personal details—such as age verification without disclosing addresses—are shared via their mobile IDs.
Senator Michael Hastings, a co-sponsor of the bill, explained,
“Mobile driver’s license and ID cards provide our residents with the option to protect their personal information. There is no reason age verification should require residents to disclose sensitive information such as their address when we have the technology available for mobile cards that allow for selective information disclosure.”
The legislation also explicitly prohibits law enforcement officers from searching the contents of a phone after viewing a mobile ID, addressing concerns raised by privacy advocates like the ACLU.
The Role of Physical IDs and TSA Guidelines
Despite the launch of mobile IDs, physical licenses remain essential. If stopped by police, drivers must still present their physical cards, as mobile IDs are not accepted by law enforcement.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) accepts mobile IDs at airport security checkpoints but urges travelers to carry physical IDs as a backup. The TSA highlights that if a digital ID cannot be verified, a physical ID will be required.
As noted by officials, Real ID compliance extends to mobile IDs, but carrying traditional identification remains recommended for now.

Future Outlook and Technology Integration
