The Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program is now possible to approve for new parents and families in the state of Illinois.
There is a program that provides nutritional benefits to approximately 6.6 million people in the United States on a monthly basis.
New eligibility requirements for the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program have been announced by the Illinois Department of Human Services.
As a result of this change, eligibility is expanded to include more families across the state.
Through the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) provides families, mothers, infants, and children up to the age of five with the supplemental nutrition they require at no cost to them. All those who are qualified will be given a WIC card that contains the benefits, which will allow them to purchase only items that are approved by the WIC program, such as infant formula and fresh fruits and vegetables. Now, a family of four can still be eligible for the program even if they make close to sixty thousand dollars annually. This represents a $10,000 increase from the previous year.
As the Outreach Coordinator for the Southern Seven Health Department of Southern Illinois, Shawnna Rhine is responsible for this position. She says that families who were previously denied WIC due to their income may now have the opportunity to apply for the program.
“We typically see an income requirement each year, but this year in particular has been particularly noteworthy because we have begun to monitor what is happening with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) as well as other benefits throughout our region,” says Rhine.
