Jacksonville Braces for Extreme Heat and Thunderstorms: Weather Alert for This Week

These past few days have really felt extra warm, and it’s not your mind. Katie Garner, a meteorologist, says that summer won’t really start until the end of the month, but in Jacksonville, it “feels like summer” already. In the past few weeks, afternoons have been hot and “very humid,” with highs in the mid-70s to low 80s, especially near the coast. At this time of day, Mayport is often the hottest place to be.

The latest prediction from The Weather Authority and Exact Track 4D says that the high temperature will reach 92 degrees today and tomorrow. The heat index will make it feel even hotter, with values that could reach as high as 100 degrees in the afternoon. Things don’t get much cooler after dark; tonight’s low is only going to be 73 degrees.

Pop-up showers and thunderstorms are likely—when, how much, and where they will happen

Even though the heat is still the main story, watchers should be ready for the weather to change. The scientist is keeping an eye on a line of showers and storms coming in from the west, which is near Tallahassee and Thomasville, Georgia right now. Early on, those storms are outside of our watching area, but later in the morning, they should move into the Jacksonville area.

Best guess on when things will happen? Between 10:45 and 11 a.m., there is a better chance of rain, and it will stay rainy through lunch and into the early afternoon. The Exact Track 4D radar shows that there is a 40 to 50 percent chance of rain in Jacksonville. This means that some people might stay dry, but others will have to deal with scattered showers and the chance of a few strong storms, especially in areas that are marked as higher risk on The Weather Authority’s severe weather maps.

Green Cove Springs could get almost 2 inches of rain over the next five days, while McClenny and Waycross could get about 1.5 inches. The coast should expect less than a tenth of an inch, while Jacksonville will get about an inch. The Weather Authority says that this trend of rain will last through the weekend.

Beach and weekend weather: how to stay safe and what you need to know

Are you going to the beach? A expert says that the air temperature will be around 90 degrees and the water temperature will be 83 degrees. This is a typical summer day in Northeast Florida. Do not be fooled by the breeze, though. The UV index is high, so use a lot of sunscreen.

It looks like rip currents won’t be too dangerous, which gives people who are going to the beach some peace of mind. Still, check the weather where you’re going to swim before you go. Early in the morning is best for people who want to walk their dogs because temperatures will rise quickly from the low 70s to the 80s by noon.

The Weather Authority says that there is a 60% chance of showers and storms on both Saturday and Sunday, with highs in the low 90s during the day. Because of this, it’s smart to plan for both hot and rainy weather.
