Lewisville Teen Hospitalized After Hit-and-Run Incident; Family Seeks Justice

LEWISVILLE, TX — A 17-year-old boy is fighting for recovery in the hospital after a hit-and-run driver struck him in a neighborhood alley Sunday evening, leaving him seriously injured and fleeing the scene.

Teen Struck in Neighborhood Alley While Walking

John Chambers, a junior at a local high school, was walking through an alley between College Parkway and Grove Drive on May 18 when a truck hit him and did not stop, according to Lewisville police.

John’s mother, Amanda Muckle, said her son had just put away his bike because of the muddy ground and was taking a walk like he often does after dinner.

“My husband saw the sirens near his location on the phone and just took off running,” Amanda recalled, describing the chaotic moments after the accident.

Neighbors Rush to Help as John Bleeds in the Rain

Garrett Bussey and his wife, neighbors in the area, heard the collision and immediately came to John’s aid. They comforted him until paramedics arrived.

“He was lying there bleeding from head injuries as rain began to fall,” Garrett said. “My wife tended to him while I tried to stop the truck, but it just kept going.”

John’s aunt, Jenneve Zell, said the quick response of neighbors likely saved his life.

“If it hadn’t been for them, we don’t know how long he would have been left there,” she said.

Serious Injuries and Intensive Care Stay

John was rushed to the hospital and remains in the intensive care unit. His injuries include two facial fractures, a fractured pelvis, and a serious injury to the back of his head — damage severe enough to cause seizures, according to his family.

“The neurosurgeon said he had to have been hit pretty hard,” Amanda said.

Despite the severity of his injuries, John showed a small but hopeful sign of progress on Tuesday when he walked for the first time since the accident, using a walker.

Family Shares Heartbreak and Calls for Accountability

The family is devastated and searching for justice. Amanda described John as a caring, funny kid who has always been a good student and friend.

“It breaks my heart to see him go through this. I can’t understand how someone could hit him and just leave him bleeding,” she said.

The family has appealed to the community for any information or surveillance footage that could help identify the driver. Amanda described the suspect as a tall man, approximately 5’11”.

“I want whoever did this to take responsibility and turn themselves in,” she said.

Community Support and Recovery Ahead

John’s school community has rallied around the family, offering support during this difficult time. He is part of a group called Circle of Friends, where he mentors special needs students.

The road ahead involves months of rehabilitation and physical therapy as John works toward a full recovery.

To help cover medical expenses, the family has set up a GoFundMe page inviting the community to contribute.

Police Continue Investigation

Lewisville police urge anyone with information about the hit-and-run to come forward. The driver’s failure to stop after causing serious injury is a serious offense, and authorities are committed to finding the person responsible.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of community vigilance and compassion. The quick actions of neighbors may have saved a young life, but justice still awaits the family of John Chambers.
