Huntington, NY – A routine traffic dispute on Long Island quickly escalated into a violent encounter when a 26-year-old driver launched a brutal attack involving a boxcutter and biting following a minor car accident, authorities report.
Jayson Heitner, behind the wheel of a Jeep, collided with a 2017 Mercedes Sprinter van on West Neck Road near Old Hickory Lane. What began as a fender bender erupted into a shocking road rage incident that left one man seriously injured.
The Violent Road Rage Incident
According to Suffolk County Police, the incident took place around 3:40 p.m. on a Tuesday. After the collision, Heitner reportedly approached the 60-year-old Mercedes driver armed with a boxcutter. A physical altercation ensued.
Authorities reported that during the confrontation, Heitner slashed the victim multiple times across his face and body and even bit several of his fingers, an extreme escalation rarely seen in road rage events.
- The victim required immediate medical treatment, including multiple stitches.
- Emergency services transported the injured man to a local hospital.
- Heitner was swiftly arrested and now faces second-degree assault charges, classified as a felony.
Legal Proceedings and Defense Claims
Heitner made his first court appearance in First District Court, pleading not guilty. The court set bail at $75,000 with higher bond options available and scheduled his next hearing for Monday.
His attorney, Chase Brown, offered a differing narrative, stating that the Mercedes driver actually struck Heitner’s Jeep first and was posing a threat by holding a knife during the confrontation.
“He had a knife in his hand when my client went up to the car to make sure he was OK. He’s the one who started it. We look forward to exonerating my client. There’s a clear self-defense claim,” said Brown.
Brown also revealed that Heitner is pursuing a career in healthcare, currently in school to become a physician’s assistant and working as a paramedic.
