SUNSET BEACH, N.C. – An individual who was on vacation with his family was taken to the hospital on Wednesday morning following what is believed to have been a shark bite. This information was provided by the Sunset Beach Fire Department.
Sean Barton, who was 26 years old at the time, was traveling from New Mexico to the southeastern region of North Carolina when he was bitten by something in the water and required eleven stitches in his leg.
After his injuries, his relatives reported seeing a shark swimming in the area where he was injured. According to Barton, he was aware that something was wrong when he experienced a severe physical discomfort.
“Just finished riding an incredible wave, and then I felt a shark or something bite my leg. At that moment, I was like, I think I just got bit by a shark, and I didn’t see anything. I just kind of turned and immediately started running, trying to get into shore as quickly as I could,” Barton said. “I believe I just got bit by a shark.”
Barton’s wound appeared to be the result of a shark bite, according to the medical staff at the hospital.
Barton stated that the bite will not prevent him from entering the water, but it will give him a heightened awareness of the possible risks that may be present.
