Man Sentenced After Scamming $57K Through Fake Employment Scheme

BOISE — Woody Roberts, 38, was found guilty on two charges of misrepresenting his identity to get unemployment insurance payments, a felony that carries a maximum sentence of five years in jail, according to Attorney General Raúl Labrador’s office. Judge Annie McDevitt of Ada County sentenced Roberts last month.

Attorney General Labrador stated that unemployment fraud defrauds Idaho taxpayers and jeopardizes initiatives intended to assist individuals who are truly in need. “We’ll keep collaborating with our state partners to bring these cases to justice and get back every dollar that was stolen.”

Roberts used fraudulent information to get unemployment benefits, according to an investigation conducted by the Idaho Department of Labor’s Unemployment Insurance and Compliance division. Roberts filed weekly certificates with the Idaho Department of Labor for 56 weeks, from May 2020 to May 2021, stating that he had not worked while he had worked and received compensation for such employment. The Idaho Department of Labor gave Roberts full unemployment insurance payments as a result of his false statements.
