Maui, HI – A 47-year-old Hawaii man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the machete killing of his wife’s lover in what prosecutors described as a “horrific” and senseless act of violence.
According to court records and local news reports, Seniola Kafoa was convicted of manslaughter in May for the death of 53-year-old Sione Paletua, a father of seven.
A Deadly Confrontation
The attack happened on July 20, 2024, on Maui. Police responded to a distress call and discovered Paletua unconscious with a severe injury to his arm, the result of a machete strike.
Officers applied a tourniquet before paramedics rushed him to the hospital, but doctors pronounced him dead shortly after arrival.
A witness told police he saw Kafoa standing over Paletua’s body before fleeing the scene in a Honda. That vehicle was later found abandoned, and officers arrested Kafoa soon afterward.
Prosecutors Sought Justice
According to Law & Crime, Kafoa was initially charged with second-degree murder, but the jury opted for the lesser charge of manslaughter, a decision that frustrated Paletua’s grieving family.
“Sentencing him to prison, Your Honor, is the only appropriate sentence in this case,” said Prosecutor Frank Loyd during the hearing. “It will send a message not only to the defendant, but to the people of Maui that you don’t get a pass to kill someone because your wife was cheating.”
Circuit Judge Peter Cahill issued the maximum penalty under Hawaii law, sentencing Kafoa to 20 years in prison.
“It is a horrific death under circumstances that sadly occurred,” Cahill said. “But the bottom line is, it did happen, and we can’t ignore it.”
Family Devastated by Loss
For Paletua’s seven children, the sentencing did little to ease their grief. They lost their mother to cancer in 2011, and now, they say, the murder has left them without either parent.
“One of the main things that we will miss about our dad is just having that sense of security,” said Paletua’s eldest daughter. “We had already lost our mom, and just knowing that in this crazy world, we still had our dad at least.”
She added that Kafoa will one day have to answer to “the man above” for his actions.

Kafoa’s Apology
Through a Tongan interpreter, Kafoa apologized to Paletua’s family in court. But for many of the victim’s relatives, the apology could not undo the pain and trauma caused by the brutal killing.
The case has left the Maui community shaken, with officials emphasizing the importance of accountability, even in emotionally charged circumstances.
Broader Implications
The case highlights the devastating ripple effects of domestic violence and crimes of passion, which often leave families permanently scarred. Prosecutors stressed that personal betrayal or infidelity cannot excuse violent retaliation.
Legal experts noted that while Kafoa avoided a murder conviction, the 20-year sentence is the harshest punishment available for manslaughter under Hawaii state law.
For Paletua’s family, however, justice feels incomplete. They say they must now carry the weight of both their parents’ absence while holding on to the memory of their father as a caring provider and steady presence.
