An immigration hearing was held in Hartford this week, and according to Meriden Public Schools, a senior high school student was detained by United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement, also known as ICE.
During a hearing that was not of a criminal character, a student who was in the twelfth grade at Maloney High School was taken into jail just a few days before graduation, according to Mayor Kevin Scarpati!
“While I cannot share details about specific students, I can assure you that students who meet all of the Meriden Public Schools graduation requirements will be issued a diploma from the Meriden Board of Education,” according to a statement released by Superintendent Mark Benigni.
The Meriden Public Schools have stated that they have not been approached by ICE.
Additionally, Scarpati informed Connecticut that the city has been in communication with members of our federal delegation as well as the student’s family.
“We respect the family’s privacy as they deal with this challenging situation,” Benigni was quoted as saying.
On Tuesday of the following week, Maloney High School will be holding its graduation ceremony.
ICE has been contacted in an effort to obtain additional information.
